You know those moments where someone puts words to something you’ve felt… but never quite known how to explain?
That was this conversation.
If you’ve never heard the term matrescence before, I share more about it here.
I was invited onto radio station 8.99 The Light, with Shaylee and Rob, to talk about matrescence and motherhood. Matrescence is the complete transformation and identity shift that women experience throughout motherhood, and for many, they are navigating this without the language and support they need.
The truth is, for a lot of women, motherhood doesn’t feel the way they expected. It can feel heavier. More disorienting. Like you’ve lost your footing a little, or you’re not quite yourself anymore.
We spoke about why so many mothers feel caught off guard in that first year, the motherhood identity shift that can feel both confusing and completely consuming, and why nothing has “gone wrong” if you’re feeling lost after having a baby (or more than one!).
When women don’t know that this is a completely normal experience, they often assume that motherhood isn’t going the way they thought it would because of some personal shortcoming or failure. This is not the case.
Matrescence isn’t just for new mums. Our matrescence continues throughout our motherhood journey, as we have more children, and as we grow and develop with them through the different stages of life. Some women feel the shift straight away, others discover it further down the path.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking “Why does this feel harder than I thought it would?” or “I don’t quite feel like myself anymore…” this will land.
