Recently, I attended an incredible business retreat run by @drsophiebrock . There’s something so wonderful about stepping away from the day-to-day to focus on your growth and vision alongside like-minded women.

When you’re surrounded by others who understand your challenges and celebrate your wins (no matter how small), you feel more inspired, motivated, and supported.

I’m excited to have created a bespoke framework that beautifully captures how I work with clients and the transformation they experience. (I’ll share more on this soon)

But it is also a great reminder that we all need to find our people - the ones who get us and our challenges and who make us feel at ease when we show up authentically and in all the messiness of life.

It’s true that our villages are not the way they used to be and they don’t just appear magically. It takes intentional effort and time to find and nurture these relationships. But I promise you it’s worth making time for connection and daring to be vulnerable.

Working mothers often come to me to prepare for their next role. Sometimes, we can identify and close genuine skill and experience gaps. Sometimes, it’s a confidence gap where women underestimate their abilities and the value they bring or worry about being seen as engaging in too much self-promotion.

I also notice another type of gap.

Women tend to believe they must meet 100% of the listed requirements for the job before they can apply. And they want to know they can do those things exceptionally. Interestingly, a Hewlett Packard report stated that men typically apply for jobs when they meet only 60% of the listed qualifications.

Follow-up research by Tara Sophia Mohr, published in HBR, found that women were more likely to view job requirements as actual rules, not wishlist items and they followed these rules more strictly than men.

This difference affects who gets hired, promoted, and ultimately who fills leadership positions.

So next time you see a job ad, remember: those requirements might be more flexible than you realise. Maybe you are more ready than you think! 😊

Ever felt overwhelmed by worry? You’re not alone. Worrying can feel productive.

It’s a coping strategy that can make us think we are planning and preparing to avoid potential problems. But focusing on things we can’t control only increases our stress.

The key is to shift your attention to what you can control - your actions, your responses, and your mindset. Then, let go of the things you can’t influence or control.

This shift is about choosing where to focus your energy and finding a sense of agency.

Being intentional about how you show up — both at work and as a mother — can bring more clarity, confidence and peace. When I consciously decide to be fully present during my son’s bedtime routine, setting aside work for that time, I feel calmer, more connected and better able to deal with any challenges that arise.

Without intentionality, we risk living on autopilot, constantly reacting rather than responding thoughtfully. Our children sense our distraction, and our colleagues feel our divided attention. The cost? Missed moments with our kids and diminished performance at work — plus the nagging feeling we’re doing neither role justice.

Society normalizes the frantic juggling act. Between deadlines, school pickups, and household management, being fully present and focusing on one thing at a time feels like a luxury (or impossible). But that’s exactly why we need to persist with conscious choices about where and how we use our energy. 😌
